There are no known risks associated with this test.
What are the causes of increased ketones in urine?
Diabetic ketoacidosis is the most common cause of increased ketone level in urine.
Is a ketone urine test necessary for people with type 1 diabetes?
It is mandatory to have a ketone urine test for people with type 1 diabetes because patients of type 1 diabetes are at a higher risk of developing ketones and have diabetic ketoacidosis.
How should I prepare for this test?
No special preparations are needed for this test.
What are the signs of increased ketones in your body?
Thirst, dry mouth, frequent urination, fatigue, dry or red skin, nausea, vomiting, confusion, and trouble breathing are signs of increased ketones in the body.
A urine test result may show that you have no ketones,
A trace amount of ketones = 20mg/dl,
Moderate level of ketones = 30-40mg/dl,
A large amount of ketones > 80mg/dl.
No ketones and trace amount of ketones do not require any medical attention whereas, moderate and large amounts of ketones require immediate treatment.
