Bladder spasms
Description
Bladder Spasm, or ‘Detrusor Contraction,’ is an abnormal condition characterized by sudden and urgent need to urinate due to strong contraction of the bladder muscle, detrusor.
Bladder Spasm may cause leakage of urine from the urethra; this is known as urinary incontinence or overactive bladder.
Causes
Following are the causes:
- Nerve dysfunction or damage
- Loss of the nervous control system
- Certain medicines
- Certain infections
- Surgery involving the bladder or the surrounding structures
- Trauma or surgery affecting bladder control
- Interstitial Cystitis (bladder infection)
- Frequent catheter usage
Risk factors
The following are the risk factors:
- Usage of certain medicines
- A weak immune system increasing an individual’s susceptibility to bladder infections
- Surgery involving the bladder or surrounding structures
- Certain nerve diseases
- Tumors in the brain
- Certain medical conditions, such as diabetes
- Spinal cord injury
- Pregnancy
- Elderly
- Menopausal women
Symptoms
The following are the symptoms:
- Urinary urgency
- Bladder or pelvic pain
- Leakage of urine
- Frequent urination
- Numbness or tingling in legs
- Blood in the urine (not in all patients)
Diagnosis
The diagnosis of Bladder Spasm is made when a doctor examines the patient physically, checks relevant symptoms, and performs certain lab tests, such as assessing the pressure in the bladder and certain nerve functioning tests.
Management
Following is the management:
- Regular and directed use of medicines
- Light Pelvic floor exercises
- Use of adult diapers (if necessary)
- Surgery (if required)
