Indications

This drug is given in the management of schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders, and for maintenance of clinical improvement.

Side Effects

Side effects of this drug can include asthenia (abnormal weakness), headache, GI disturbances, drowsiness, agitation, akathesia (restlessness and urge to move), dizzness, dystonia (abnormal muscle tone), extra-pyramidal syndrome, hypotonia (abnormally low muscle tone), tremor, and abnormal vision.

Warnings

This drug is contraindicated or not recommended in lactation. Consult your physician for better advice.

Precautions

This drug is to be given with caution in patients with QT prolongation, neuroleptic malignant syndrome (life threatening reaction to antipsychotics), tardive dyskinesia (involuntary movements of face and jaw), hyperglycemia (increased blood sugar level), seizures, and with CNS drugs/alcohol.

Contraindications

This drug is not to be given in QT prolongtion, recent MI episode, uncompensated heart failure, and cardiac arrhythmias requiring treatment with class IA and III anti-arrhythmic drugs (drugs that prolong QT interval).
