Primary Uses

Indications

This medicine is used to provide combined active immunisation (protection) of children up to 2 years of age against diphtheria (bacterial infection causing sore throat and fever), tetanus (bacterial infection invading the nerves and causing muscle spasms and rigidity), pertussis (uncontrollable, highly contagious coughing making it hard to breathe).

Side Effects

This medicine might cause local pain (at injection site) and allergy, fever following the dosage, persistent crying, irritability, headache, loss of appetite, vomiting, malaise (general weakness), somnolence (drowsiness or strong urge to sleep) and some neurological effects.

Precautions

Caution is advised while giving this vaccine to children with a febrile illness (sudden onset fever of unknown cause) with collapse and shock-like state after the vaccination, familial history of Epilepsy (neurologic disorder due to abnormal electrical activity in brain), Bleeding disorders (bleeding and clotting problems) and history of severe local reaction (skin eruptions or injection site soreness) and persistent crying for up to 3 hours after the vaccine. Caution during Pregnancy and lactation (breastfeeding) is must to avoid any harm to the baby.

Contraindications

Avoid taking this medicine in case of an acute illness (sudden onset illness) and history of convulsions (a sudden irregular movement of body due to muscle twitching) commonly associated with brain disorders like epilepsy - abnormal electrical activity in the brain or presence of toxins in body like in high-grade fever. A previously experienced severe reaction to the similar vaccine or Thrombocytopenia (low blood-platelet count) and other neurological disturbances.

What conditions should be brought to the doctor’s notice before taking the vaccine?

Patients with weak immune systems, suffering from another infectious disease, dialysis patients, cancerous patients, smokers and those obese and old should ensure to bring their conditions before the concerned doctor.

Is it advisable to continue with the vaccine if one faces a problem with their first dose?

Ensure to inform the concerned doctor about this episode and discuss an alternate time.

What is a booster dose?

A booster is a vaccine shot given a year after the completion of the entire course, this helps in extending the effectiveness of the vaccine.
