This medicine blocks the activity of certain clotting substances in the blood.
rivaroxaban
This medication is prescribed for prevention of venous thromboembolism (blood clot that starts in a vein) in patients undergoing elective hip or knee replacement surgery, treatment of DVT (blood clot that forms deep in the body), and pulmonary embolism (blood clot in an artery of lung). It is used as prophylaxis of stroke and systemic embolism (obstruction of artery) in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (irregular heartbeat) and prophylaxis of atherothrombotic events (sudden disruption of atherosclerotic plaque and blood clot formation) following an acute coronary syndrome with increased cardiac biomarkers.
Contradications
This drug is contraindicated in patients with creatinine clearance <15ml/min, clinically significant active bleeding, liver disease associated with coagulopathy (impaired blood coagulation), and hip fracture surgery.
Side effects
Patients administered with this medicine may experience anemia (low red blood cell count), nausea (feeling like vomiting), headache, dizziness (feeling like sleeping), hypotension (low blood pressure), haematoma (localised bleeding), epistaxis (bleeding from nose), haemoptysis (blood in sputum), gastrointestinal upset, fever, edema (swelling), fatigue, renal (kidney) impairment, and serious skin reactions.
