dydrogesterone

Dydrogesterone uses include treatment and managment of dysmenorrhea (menstrual cramps), habitual and threatened abortion, endometriosis (a painful disorder of the uterus), infertility due to inadequate luteal phase (fertility disorder), premenstrual syndrome, used along with oestrogen in replacement therapy.

Contradications

Dydrogesterone should not be used by patients who have a history of liver tumours, with genital or breast cancer (unless used for the management of these conditions), severe arterial diseases, undiagnosed vaginal bleeding, acute porphyria (metabolic disorder). Progestogens should not be used if there is a history during pregnancy of idiopathic jaundice, severe pruritis (unusual itch on the skin), or pemphigoid gestations (autoimmune disorder). 

Side effects

Dydrogesterone side effects include menstrual disturbances, premenstrual-like syndrome (including bloating, fluid retention, breast tenderness), weight change, nausea, headache, dizziness, insomnia, drowsiness, depression, change in libido; also skin reactions (including urticaria, pruritis, rash, and acne), hirsutism (unwanted hair growth in women) and alopecia (unusual hair growth) or jaundice.

This medication is used for treating irregular and abnormal duration of menstruation. It is also used for preventing abortions in women with history of repeated abortions.

Storage:

Please use cautiously in patients at risk of fluid retention/swelling (e.g. epilepsy), with heart impairment, high blood pressure, asthma, and diabetes.
