Topical lesions

Description

Topical Lesions are abnormal areas of the skin that are inflamed and damaged. They are different from the surrounding tissue due to mild or severe tissue injury, and may appear as bumps, patches, an ulcer, or a sore.

Topical Lesions have several types. Some include:

  • Acne
  • Eczema
  • Cold sores
  • Blisters
  • Hives
  • Moles
  • Impetigo
  • Psoriasis
Causes

Following are the causes:

  • Acne, usually harmless; may appear as blackheads, whiteheads, or pimples. May or may not require treatment
  • Eczema, chronic condition. Often appear as itchy, red patches on the skin which can be managed by certain lifestyle changes
  • Cold Sores, frequently form due to the Herpes Simplex Virus (contagious viral infection), stress, or other factors. Usually self-limiting; however, may require treatment
  • Blisters, bubble appearance of an area of the skin due to injury and accumulation of pus or a watery liquid. Mostly self-limiting
  • Hives, the allergic reaction on the skin appearing as a red, inflamed, itchy patch
  • Moles, circular or oblong patches usually darker than the surrounding skin
  • Impetigo, red, inflamed patches due to a skin infection usually due to Staphylococcus or Streptococcus
  • Psoriasis, itchy or scaly skin due to an unknown cause. However, it may occur due to a problem with the immune system
Risk factors

The following are the risk factors:

  • Sensitive skin
  • Family or genetic history
  • Weak immune system
  • Usage of certain medicines
Symptoms

The following are the symptoms:

  • Red, patchy area
  • Inflamed skin
  • Pain
  • Abnormal skin color
Diagnosis

The diagnosis is made when a dermatologist or doctor examines the patient’s skin physically, checks relevant symptoms, and performs certain lab tests, such as biopsy or lesion swab or scraping.

 

Management

Following is the management:

  • Regular use of medicines prescribed
  • Surgery (severe cases)
  • Lifestyle changes
  • Avoidance of exposure to triggering agents
