Scaly Skin

Description

Scaly skin can either be in the form of cracked, dry and peeling patches on the skin that gives the skin a greyish color. This could be due to dead skin flakes that do not shed off or a person may have a flaky scalp (dandruff).

Causes

Our skin has a natural ability to stay supple and moist by holding in water and constantly rebuilding- new cells form and older ones shed off, but using too many chemicals and soaps take away the protective oils from skin, making it over dry. Most skin diseases have the clinical presentation of scaly skin. Some Medicines can also be the cause of dry and scaly skin.

Risk factors

Certain things are known to increase the risk of a condition, risk factors for scaly skin include:

  • A weak immune system, making the skin rebuilding process slower and dead skin does not shed off easily.
  • Aging affects every normal function of the body. Skin gets wrinkled and dry.
  • Too much sun exposure.
  • Vitamin A deficiency.
  • A family history of diseases like psoriasis, eczema, Ichthyosis (fish scale disease).
  • Contact with certain fabrics may start a skin rash.
  • Medicines for controlling acne, blood-cholesterol and high-blood pressure.
Symptoms

Skin anywhere on the body might get affected but common zones are between the fingers, behind ears, knees, elbows, and back. The person will feel:

  • Itching
  • Thick, dry patches on the skin.
  • Peeling of dry skin scales, leaving the skin red.
  • Dandruff in hair and hair-fall.
Diagnosis

The diagnosis of skin problems is made by examining the skin which usually gives a clue about the disease. Additionally, questions about any family history of skin problems and known allergy to anything will help the doctor in identifying the root cause.

Management
  • Skin ointments and lotions will help moisturize the scaly and dry skin.
  • For deeper lesions, oral medicines and vitamins are given by dermatologists.
When to consult a doctor?

When over-the-counter moisturizers are not being helpful, a visit to the dermatologist will help to identify any serious medical condition.
