Pupil Dilation

Description

Pupil Dilation is the phenomenon of widening of the eyeball, the pupil in particular. It may be done before a medical procedure by a doctor or surgeon, or it may occur as a result of certain drugs or abnormal conditions.

Causes

Pupil Dilation may occur due to a wide variety of reasons. Some include the following:

  • Exposure to antihistamines
  • Anti-nausea medicines
  • Anti-seizure medicines
  • Atropine (used in medicines)
  • Botox or other medicines containing botulin
  • Decongestants
  • Tricyclic antidepressants
  • Usage of certain drugs

Symptoms

The major symptom of Pupil Dilation is a wide or large pupil. The other symptoms that may or may not occur include:

  • Increased sensitivity to light
  • Blurry vision
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Feeling of having a constricted forehead
  • Eye irritation
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Drooping eyelid or difficulty moving the eye (severe cases)
Diagnosis

The diagnosis is made when a doctor examines the patient physically, checks relevant symptoms, and performs certain lab tests. One of your cranial nerves, the third nerve, may also be checked.

Management

To treat Pupil Dilation stop the usage of potentially harmful drugs that may be causing pupil dilatation. Additionally, if it has occurred due to any medicine that you are using, contact and inform your prescriber immediately.
