Motion Sickness

Description

Motion sickness is known commonly as travel sickness. It is a sensory mismatch- what happens is that the eyes perception of movement doesn’t match the inner ear’s perception of movement. So the motion sickness occurs when your eyes tell your brain that there is no movement but your inner ear tells your brain there is movement. These conflicting signals ultimately cause nausea, headaches and other symptoms of motion sickness.

Causes

Motion sickness occurs when nerves that sense movement send inconsistent signals to the brain. For example, when riding in a moving car, the inner ears sense motion, but unless the person can see out the window, his or her eyes do not see and confirm this movement. As a result, the person may become car sick. It can also occur from the swell of the sea, motion of a plane in turbulence movement of a speed-boat etc.

Symptoms
  • It causes nausea
  • The symptoms are progressive. First, you lose your desire for food.
  • Then saliva collects in your mouth and you begin to sweat freely.
  • Eventually, you become nauseated and disoriented.
  • You may have headaches.
  • Finally, can become incompletely incapacitated (prevent from functioning in a normal way)
Diagnosis

Your doctor will start by reviewing your medical history and conducting a physical and neurological examination. Diagnosis of motion sickness is usually based on symptoms after questioning and excluding other illnesses. To determine if your symptoms are caused by problems in the balance function in your inner ear, your doctor is likely to recommend hearing tests.

Management

If you're susceptible to motion sickness:

  • Your doctor may suggest that you take an over-the-counter antihistamine e.g. Dimenhydrinate or Meclizine (please consult a doctor before taking any medication)
  • Take anti-emetic drugs (medication that reduces nausea)

Helpful tips:

  • Focus on the horizon or on a distant, stationary object. Don't read while traveling or use electronic devices.
  • Keep your head still, while resting against a seat back.
  • Don't smoke or sit near smokers.
  • Avoid strong odors, spicy and greasy foods, and alcohol.
  • Try ginger.
  •  Eat lightly.
When to consult a doctor?

If the helpful tips mentioned above don't seem to help you or your child's motion sickness, ask your doctor about other options.
