Mild to Moderate Acne

Description

Acne is a skin disorder that occurs as a result of clogging and plugging of hair follicles with oil and dead skin cells. Inflammation of these clogged hair follicles is a dreadful outcome of acne and can manifest in the form of blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, knots, and scars.

Causes

Cardinal causes of acne include:

  • Hormonal imbalance,
  • Genetics,
  • Increased sebum production,
  • Diet,
  • Environmental factors,
  • Bacterial contamination of clogged hair follicles,
  • Chemical irritants.
Risk factors

RISK FACTORS:

Important predisposing factors for acne are:

  • Physical irritation of the vulnerable skin by occluding it with tight dressings or clothes, scratching or pulling,
  • Sharing cosmetic products with someone that is already suffering from acne,
  • Trying out new makeup products,
  • Certain medicines or topical ointments,
  • Hormonal imbalance caused by menstrual cycle in women,
  • Too much exposure to sunlight,
  • Excessive consumption of oily food items,
  • Humid climatic condition,
  • Obesity,
  • Physical or emotional stress.
Symptoms

Key symptoms of acne are: blackheads, pimples, scars on face, chest, back, or shoulders. Swollen, red, purulent (pus filled) bumps on skin that bleed on irritation. Redness around small skin eruptions, scarring of skin, large and painful lumps under the skin, red and pus filled bumps that occur in groups, and red lesions that have crusted borders.

Diagnosis

Acne can be diagnosed after extensive physical examination of the patient, thorough medical and family history taking, and certain investigations that help in ruling out metabolic disorders. Diagnosis is also based on place, severity, type, and duration of acne.

Management

Management of acne can only be done after thoroughly assessing the affected person’s condition, core cause of acne outbreak, age of affected person, medical condition of the affected person, and current therapeutic measures being taken by the affected person. First line of treatment of acne is to take a balanced diet, regular face washing and skincare regimen, avoiding cosmetics, greasy creams and ointments. If the above mentioned measures fail to improve your condition, then your doctor may prescribe you some topical retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, topical and oral antibiotics, and hormonal therapies.

When to consult a doctor?

A doctor should be consulted if your acne is severe, and cannot be resolved with over the counter medication. A doctor should also be consulted if you are experiencing other symptoms with severe acne. These include facial hair growth, hair loss, weight gain etc., as this may be a sign of hormonal disturbances, and require further investigation.
