Irregular Menstrual Periods

Description

Periods that occur less than 21 days or more than 35 days apart are known as Irregular menstrual periods.Other examples include missing 3 periods consecutively. Menstrual cycles that are much heavier or lighter, and that last longer than seven or eight days. Periods accompanied by cramping, nausea, pain or vomiting. Spotting or bleeding that happens after periods, following sex or after menopause. 

Causes

Uterine polyps

Polycystic Ovary syndrome 

Pelvic inflammatory disease 

Premature ovarian insufficiency

Pregnancy, breast feeding, stress, too much exercise, certain medications  or changing birth control pills, hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) or underactive thyroid.

Symptoms
  • Spotting or bleeding between periods

Diagnosis

The doctor will take your medical history and ask questions about your menstrual cycle. Some tests might be done depending on severity, which are as follows:

  • Vaginal cultures 
  • Pelvic ultrasound examination 
  • Blood tests (to rule out anemia)
  • An endometrial biopsy
