Hypercalcemia

Description

Hypercalcemia is a condition in which calcium level in your blood is above normal level. Too much calcium weakens your bones which can create kidney stones. Hypercalcemia is a result of overactive parathyroid glands. 

Causes

There are various causes which include:

Cancer

Various medical disorders 

Certain medications

Too much calcium and Vitamin D supplements intake.

Risk factors

Common risk factors include:

Age group 50-60 years

Post menopausal women

Hyperparathyroidism family history

Symptoms

If hypercalcemia is mild, there won’t be any symptoms. However, if it’s severe the symptoms include : 


  • Digestive system: Stomach upset, nausea, constipation and vomiting.
  • Kidneys: Excess calcium makes kidneys work harder to filter it. 
  • Brain:  Brain works slow, resulting in confusion, fatigue and lethargy. It can also result in depression.
  • Heart: It causes palpitations and fainting. 
  • Bones and muscles : It can cause bone pain and muscle weakness.
Diagnosis

Your doctor might recommend a few blood tests to diagnose high calcium in the blood. Blood tests can also reveal if parathyroid hormone is high.
