Description
The Human Metapneumovirus (hMPV) is a viral infection that effects the respiratory track. It can present itself in the form of a mild cold-like symptom or severe respiratory infection.
Causes

The casues of Human Metapneumovirus (hMPV):

  • Inhaling respiratory droplets of an infected individual after they cough or sneeze.
  • Touching an infected individual  e.g shaking hands and then touching the mouth, nose or eyes.
  • Touching objects or surfaces that have been touched by an infected individual and have been contaminated with the virus and then touching the mouth, nose, or eyes.
Risk factors

The risk factors of Human Metapneumovirus (hMPV):
  • Young children and infants.
  • Adults with chronic medical conditios.
  • Individuals with a weak immune system.
  • Individuals with respiratory condtions like asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Symptoms
The symptoms of Human Metapneumovirus (hMPV):

  1. Cough
  2. Nasal congestion or runny nose
  3. Sore throat
  4. Fever
  5. Difficukty breathing
  6. Wheezing
  7. Fatigue 
  8. Chest pain
Diagnosis

The diagnosis of Human Metapneumovirus (hMPV) is done in one of two ways:

  1. A molecular test like PCR to detect the virus's genetic material.
  2. An antigen test to identify viral proteins in the respiratory system.
Management


The treatment of Human Metapneumovirus (hMPV):

There is no specific antiviral treatment for hMPV. The management is symptomatic and includes:

  • Maintaining hydration.
  • Using over-the-counter medications to alleviate fever and pain.
  • Providing oxygen therapy in severe cases.
  • Hospitalization for severe respiratory distress or complications.
