Gastrointestinal diseases
Description
These diseases affect the Gastrointestinal (GI) tract from the mouth to the anus. GERD, colorectal cancer and diarrhea are examples of Gastrointestinal diseases. There are two types which are functional and structural. Most of the gastrointestinal diseases can be structural and functional.
In Functional Gastrointestinal diseases the GI tract looks normal but doesn’t move properly.
Common examples include : Irritable bowel syndrome, constipation, food poisoning, GERD and diarrhea.
While in Structural Gastrointestinal diseases the bowel looks abnormal upon examination and also doesn’t work properly. Few examples include: Stenosis, hemorrhoids, colon cancer, colon polyps and inflammatory bowel disease.
Causes
Many factors can cause Gastrointestinal diseases which include:
- Eating a low fiber diet
- Not getting enough exercise
- Intaking large amounts of dairy products
- Changes in routine like traveling
- Stress
- Pregnancy
- Overusing antidiarrheal medicines
- Taking antidepressants

Doctors might refer to some tests which include colonoscopy, GI endoscopy, capsule endoscopy, and endoscopic ultrasound.
Management
Lifestyle and dietary changes can make a huge difference. Changes such as:
- Avoid fizzy drinks
- Cut fatty foods
- Quit smoking
- Don’t chew gum
- Avoid foods that cause gas
- Exercise
