Dysuria describes a painful and burning sensation when passing urine.
Dysuria is mostly experienced by women in pregnancy, and in men and women both having urine infections (most common).
Causes
Drinking less water produces concentrated urine that causes a burning sensation.
Application of allergic products like deodorants and wearing nylon underwear.
Catheter placement can be painful and damage the skin.
Poor hygiene and cleanliness of genitalia.
Frequent intercourse and rough sexual activity.
Common bacterial infections of the urinary tract like urethritis (urethra is the tube that carries urine to bladder for excretion), prostatitis (prostate), cystitis (bladder) and kidney cystitis.
Holding the urine for long periods may damage the bladder and also let the germs in urine cause infections and burning sensation.
Risk factors
Candida infection of vagina with sore and rash skin produces a burning sensation when urine touches the damaged skin.
Sexually transmitted infections like syphilis, genital herpes, chlamydia and gonorrhea.
Old age and hormonal effects can produce vaginal dryness and more chances of infections.
Uterine or prostate cancer.
High blood pressure and diabetes may damage the kidneys and cause secondary infections of kidney and urinary tract.
Kidney diseases (kidney stones, cysts) may be causing a blockage.
Symptoms
The sufferer of dysuria will complain of:
Itching and discomfort.
Soreness of the genitalia.
Pain in side of body (the location of kidney) in kidney stones.
Burning like feeling on passing urine.
A feeling of incomplete emptying of bladder and need to pee more and frequently.
Pain in intercourse.
Leakage of white fluid (in both males and females) in infections.
Disturbed nights and usual routine due to pain and discomfort.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis of the disease or infection causing dysuria is done by following these steps:
Asking questions about history of the symptoms of pain, frequency of such a problem, sexual activity, medicines, diabetes or kidney problem, catheter insertion in some medical condition.
Examination of the abdomen by feeling the kidney, checking the genitalia.
Signs of infections in women are checked by a gynecologist.
Urine lab tests and urine culture to check for an infection or presence of blood (suggestive of some complication)
Ultrasound for an image of kidneys and urinary tract.
Cystoscopy for viewing the bladder and urethra for a problem.
Management
Prevention is always better than cure so let’s help your kidneys by drinking more water, eating fiber-loaded and vitamin C rich diet (to fight bacterial infections by keeping the urine acidic enough) , quit smoking, stop drinking carbonated fizzy drinks, alcohol and caffeine.
Antibiotics will treat infections of the urinary tract and kidneys.
Painkillers help relief the pain.
Flavoxate to help urinary urgency and bladder problem.
Surgical correction of kidney stones and cysts.
When to consult a doctor?
Blood spotting, pain and fever following an infection of the urinary tract is suggestive of some complications and needs urgent medical care by a specialist doctor (urologist).
