Bloating

Description

Bloating occurs when there is a storage or build-up of water and/or gases in your intestines and other bodily tissues, making the stomach area visibly swollen.

Causes

Following are the causes of bloating:

  • Reduced bowel movements
  • Anorexia
  • Stomach ulcers
  • Anxiety
  • Water retention
  • Indigestion
  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • Menopause
  • Smoking
  • Dehydration
  • Increase fat in diet
  • Menstruation
Risk factors
  • Bacterial imbalances (when there is a disruption in the normal amount of bacteria in the gut, it leads to increase gas production and extreme bloating)
  • Food sensitivities (sensitivity to food e.g. gluten or lactose causes digestive discomfort, bloating and other symptoms like acne and skin rashes)
  • Low stomach acid (prevents proper breakdown of food, thus increasing digestive distress and disrupting nutrient absorption leading to bloating)
  • Hormonal imbalances (dysregulation in hormones level can cause bloating, reduced appetite control and fat accumulation in your lower abdomen)
  • Damaged intestinal lining
Symptoms

Bloating is followed by symptoms such as:

  • Abdominal fullness
  • Abdominal tightness
  • Distension in abdomen
  • Increase in burping or flatulence
  • Cramps
  • Pain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Diarrhea
  • Lower back pain
Diagnosis

Your doctor will take a detailed history asking questions like duration of the bloating, your diet, any triggers that you might be suspecting, if you’re a female, any change in bloating during the menstrual cycle, any other associated symptoms, any past medical history, current medications.

Your doctor will then examine you, paying particular attention to palpating your abdomen for any masses or swelling.

Management
  • DIET MANAGEMENT: Stop over eating, limit fats in your diet, Eat slowly and properly chew food- this helps prevent bloating.
  • If you frequently experience bloating caused by gas, avoid these habits that increase how much air you swallow, drinking through a straw, chewing gum, drinking carbonated beverages, sucking on hard candy.
When to consult a doctor?

A doctor should be consulted if you’re troubled by bloating on a regular basis; otherwise there is nothing to worry about temporary bloating.
