Bipolar Disorder

Description

Bipolar disorder is a brain disorder characterized by depression, periods of lowered mood, as well as mania, periods of heightened mood. Those with bipolar disorder tend to experience these moods much stronger than the average person, making their outrageous behavior very noticeable to the outside world.

Causes

Bipolar disorder occurs due to a chemical imbalance in the brain. Why it happens is still under research.

Risk factors

Following genetic and environmental factors are believed to increase the risk of developing bipolar disorder:

  • Hereditary (if your siblings or parents have bipolar disorder, it increases your chance of having bipolar disorder by 10 percent)
  • Certain drugs and medications can trigger maniac episodes e.g. selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs)
  • Traumatic event
Symptoms

A person suffering from depression (period of lowered mood) may show following signs and symptoms:

  • Hopeless and discouraged
  • Lack of energy
  • Unable to focus
  • Loss of appetite
  • Sleeping too much
  • Fatigue
  • Thoughts of suicide

A person having a manic episode (period of heightened mood) may show following signs and symptoms:

  • Energetic
  • Overly happy
  • Talking fast and erratic
  • Euphoric
  • High self-esteem
  • Delusions
Diagnosis
In order to diagnose, your doctor may conduct a physical exam and psychiatric assessment. Lab tests may also be carried out to identify any other conditions that could be causing the symptoms.
Management

Even though there is no cure for bipolar disorder, identifying and treating individuals is very important, since there’s a danger of self-injury. Following are some treatment options to treat bipolar disorder:

  • LITHIUM SALTS (Lithium acts as a mood stabilizer)
  • Medications like anti-depressant drugs, antipsychotics, anticonvulsants, benzodiazepines
  • Psychological intervention may also be required e.g. talk therapy with a psychiatrist
  • Maintaining enough sleep
  • Cutting out alcohol and caffeine
When to consult a doctor?
  • Consult a psychiatrist if you experience mood swings often in yourself or a loved one.
  • A doctor should be consulted if the medication prescribed is not helping in managing the symptoms.
  • If a person suffering from bipolar disorder starts to have suicidal thoughts and behavior then medical assistance should be called right away.
