Arthralgia

Description

Arthralgia is mild to severe pain that arises from any joint, affecting the mobility of the patient. The pain may be sharp, dull, stabbing, burning, or throbbing; affecting the mobility of the patient. It can be aggravated by mobility and pressure on the joints.

Causes

Arthralgia may be limited to only one joint or multiple joints. Causes of arthralgia are:

  1. Arthritis (inflammation of joints)
  2. SLE (Systemic lupus erythematosus): Autoimmune disease affecting healthy tissues.
  3. Rheumatic fever: Autoimmune inflammatory disease affecting heart, joints, and skin.
  4. Infections like Haemophilus, influenza, measles, and mumps.
  5. Dislocation of bones
  6. Broken and fractured bones
  7. Overuse of joints
  8. Rupture of tendons
  9. Osteomyelitis (infection of bone)
  10. Bursitis ( inflammation of sac that cushions the joint)
Risk factors

Following factors may contribute to high risk of developing arthralgia:

  • Older people are more prone to developing arthralgia
  • Long-term strain on joints
  • Increased weight
  • Previous joint surgery
  • Previous joint injuries.
Symptoms

Patients with arthralgia may experience:

  • Tenderness
  • Burning
  • Itching
  • Swelling
  • Redness
  • Numbness or tingling
  • Fever
  • Fatigue
  • Joint stiffness.
Diagnosis

To reach a diagnosis, your doctor may ask for your complete medical history, followed by a physical examination. Examination mainly focuses on abnormality of the joints by closed inspection and special manoeuvers to identify the cause. After examination, your doctor may run a few lab tests if the diagnosis is not clear. These tests include:

  1. Joint fluid analysis.
  2. Blood tests including tests for autoantibodies, complete blood picture, or C-reactive protein.
  3. X-rays, ultrasounds, or MRI.
Management

Management of arthralgia focuses on treatment of the underlying cause but symptoms can be relieved beforehand.

  • Homecare: Taking hot showers, stretching, and icing may be helpful in reducing pain and swelling.
  • Medicines:
  1. Acetaminophen can be used for mild arthralgia without any signs of inflammation.
  2. NSAIDs are useful for treatment of moderate arthralgia with signs of swelling.
  3. Opioids can be helpful for treating severe arthralgia.
  • Physiotherapy: Physiotherapy is a method used to increase the mobility and function of the joints.
  • Surgery: Joint replacement therapy can be used for the treatment of severely damaged joints.
When to consult a doctor?

Seek immediate help if you have fever associated with arthralgia, unexplained arthralgia, unexplained bleeding, severe weight loss, compromised mobility, or worsening of the condition.
