Alopecia

Description

Alopecia is an autoimmune condition that causes hair to fall out (small patches), usually unnoticeable. Alopecia develops when the immune system attacks the hair follicles which results in hair loss. Hair Loss occurs on the scalp, eyelashes, eyebrows in some cases, and face, as well as other parts of the body. Alopecia usually develops slowly and reoccurs after years.

Causes

An autoimmune condition always develops when the immune system mistakes healthy cells for foreign substances. The hair follicles become smaller, stop producing hair, eventually leading to hair loss. Doctors don’t know the exact cause of this condition. It often occurs in people who have a family history of autoimmune conditions like type 1 Diabetes or rheumatoid arthritis. 

Risk factors
  • Family history of balding. 
  • Recently pregnant or is currently pregnant
  • Certain medical conditions such as diabetes or lupus 
  • Poor nutrition 
Symptoms

The main symptom of alopecia is hair loss. Clumps of hair are noticed first maybe in the shower  or pillow. Symptoms usually occur in men more than women. Men may experience hair loss in facial hair, scalp, chest and back hair. 

Diagnosis

Doctors usually diagnose Alopecia by looking at the extent of hair loss also by examining hair samples. Doctors may also perform a scalp biopsy, blood tests might be done. 

Some of the blood tests are as follows: 

  • Thyroid hormones
  • Iron levels
  • C-reactive protein 
  • Free and total testosterone
Management

Alopecia can be managed by corticosteroids prescribed by your doctor. Even Topical immunotherapy.
