Vaccinations against Streptococcus pneumoniae are called pneumococcal vaccines. They can help prevent pneumonia (an infection of lungs that causes the air sacs in your lungs to become inflamed and get clogged with pus or fluid), sepsis (severe response of body to a bacterial infection), and meningitis (inflammation of the brain and spinal cord's protective membranes)in some cases. They are administered by injection into a muscle or just beneath the skin. Chemicals derived from Streptococcus pneumonia bacteria are used in this pneumococcal vaccination. Our bodies perceive these compounds as foreign after receiving pneumococcal vaccine and develop antibodies to kill them.

How To Use

  • In adults, the pneumococcal vaccination is administered as a single dose.
  • The vaccination is administered as a 0.5 mL liquid solution into the muscle (intramuscular injection), usually the deltoid (shoulder) muscle, or beneath the skin (subcutaneous or SC).
  • Before the injection, the region to be injected is usually cleaned by applying alcohol on the skin.
  • In children, the conjugated Prevnar 13 vaccination is administered in a four injections series.

This vaccine has the potential to trigger anaphylaxis, a life-threatening allergic reaction  that necessitates prompt medical intervention. If  your child or you develop a rash, irritation, itching, swelling of the throat or tongue, or breathing difficulty after receiving the pneumococcal vaccine, consult your doctor immediately.  Pneumococcal vaccines should be kept in the refrigerator between 2°C and 8°C. Do not put the vaccination in the freezer or expose it to freezing cold temperatures. Keep the vaccine out of children’s and pets’ reach.

Side Effects

This vaccine may cause Local reaction at injection site (i.e. rash and itching on skin), Low grade fever or relapse (unstablity after a period of improvement) of stabilized idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (disorder with excessive bleeding and bruising).

Pregnancy

 Pneumococcal vaccines appear to be harmless when given during the second or third trimester. There is insufficient information about vaccine safety in the first trimester. Pregnant women should consult their doctors before receiving the pneumococcal vaccine.

Lactation

Pneumococcal vaccine is considered safe in breast feeding women. Lactating females should, however, consult their doctors before receiving pneumococcal vaccine.

Driving

There is no evidence that the pneumococcal vaccine will interfere with your ability to drive.

Liver

People with liver diseases should consult their doctors before getting pneumococcal vaccine.

Kidney

People with Kidney diseases should consult their doctors before getting pneumococcal vaccine.

Alcohol

There is no known interaction between pneumococcal vaccine and Alcohol. Consult your doctor before consumption.

Precautions

Before getting this vaccine, inform your doctor or nurse about the medical history of your child or yourself, especially if you or your child has had a serious allergic response to a vaccine (e.g., paralysis, encephalopathy),Guillain-Barre syndrome, a bleeding or clotting problem, such as hemophilia or bruising easily; or a weakened immune system induced by sickness or by using any specific medicine.

Contraindications

Avoid taking/giving this vaccine during or atleast 10 days before to someone who is taking immunosuppresive therapy (medicines to reduce immunity or defensive reactions of the body) or to patients having Hodgkin's disease (lymphoma - cancer of the immune system) who have had chemotherapy and extensive radiation therapy. It's unsafe for the baby therefore avoid during Pregnancy and lactation (breastfeeding).
