Normal saline is used as a maintenance therapy in children with hyponatremic (low sodium levels) hypokalemic (low potassium levels) dehydration due to severe diarrhea etc. It is also used for adults whose oral intake of water and electrolytes is insufficient due to various conditions. It is an electrolyte infusion solution for infants, children and adults.
Some of its side effects include cerebral (brain), pulmonary (lungs) and peripheral (lower hands and legs) edema (swelling due to fluid retention), congestive heart failure (a condition characterized with inefficient pumping of heart due to accumulation of fluids in it), acidosis (increased acidity in blood) and electrolyte imbalance (abnormality in concentration of electrolytes in your body) may occur with large volume and/or rapid infusion.
Pregnancy
No definitive data regarding pregnancy is available, therefore, be cautious.
Lactation
The effects of this medication is undetermined in nursing females. Hence, consult your healthcare provider for further advice.
Precautions
Before taking normal saline inform your doctor if you are allergic to it. Patients with renal (kidney) failure, cardiac (heart) failure, reduced urinary output due to obstructive urinary tract disease (a condition in which there is obstruction that inhibits urinary flow) and hypertonic dehydration (a condition in which water excretion is more than salt excretion, therefore increasing amounts of salts in body). Sodium chloride content of this product is 9.0 gm/litre whereas, the daily intake of an adult is 3-6 gm. Therefore , care should be taken in those cases where salt intake is restricted as in edema (swelling due to fluid retention), hypertension (high blood pressure) e.t.c
