This medicine is used chronically in patients for brain ageing, cerebral atherosclerosis (thickening off walls of brain arteries), brain ischemia (insufficient blood supply to brain), and cerebral circulatory insufficiencies (obstruction of brain arteries). This medicine is acutely used in patients for head injuries, brain intoxication, and cerebral vascular accidents and also in intensive care, comas, and resuscitation. It is also used in psychic, motor and sensory rehabilitation.
Patients using this medicine may experience hyperkinesia (abnormal involuntary movements), insomnia (trouble sleeping), weight gain, somnolence (excessively sleepy), depression, nervousness, diarrhea, and rash.
Pregnancy
This medicine is contraindicated in pregnant females as it may cause fatal outcomes in unborn child.
Lactation
Administration in nursing mothers is contraindicated or not recommended.
Precautions
Patients who are aged or have history of renal (kidney) impairment should use this medicine with caution. Medicine should not be stopped abruptly but gradually and the patient should be monitored for suicidal tendencies.
This medication is contraindicated in patients suffering from severe renal(kidney) insufficiency, hepatic(liver) impairment and cerebral(relating to the brain) hemorrhage(uncontrolled loss of blood due to injury to a vessel wall).
What is this medicine?
This medicine contains the active ingredient Piracetam, it acts on the brain and nervous system to protect it against the shortage of oxygen. It is also used in combination to treat myoclonus (sudden muscle spasm).
Will this medicine increase my weight?
This medicine may cause weight gain, therefore, you should have a balanced diet and exercise regularly.
How to take this medicine?
Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow it as a whole. Do not chew, crush or break it. It may be taken with or without food, but it is better to take it at a fixed time.
Who should avoid taking this tablet?
You should not take this medicine if you’re allergic to piracetam or any of the ingredients in the tablet. Also, avoid this tablet if you have history of any kidney-related problem.
Can I drive after taking this medicine?
Shakiness and dizziness are common side effects of this medicine. Avoid driving or operating machines after taking this medicine.
Can you take Piracetam at night?
It is usually taken two or three times daily(morning, midday and in the evening).
How long does it take for Piracetam to work?
The elimination half life(time required by a quantity to reduce to half of its initial value) is 4-5 hours.
