  • Take this medication orally(by mouth) 30 minutes before meals.
  • Contact your doctor if there is involuntary movement of face, eyes, tongue or hands including lip smacking(striking), chewing, puckering(contract) of mouth, frowning, scowling(frown in an angry way) and blinking of eyes.
  • Stopping medication abruptly may cause dizziness(feeling of being sleepy), nervousness and headache hence, do not stop abruptly and gradually lower the dose of the medication.
  • Avoid alcohol and CNS depressants.

Primary Uses

Nausea and vomiting

Indications

This medication is used to treat patients suffering from dyspepsia(indigestion), flatulence(accumulation of gas in stomach), regurgitation of bile(movement of a digestive liquid produced by liver into the stomach or oesophagus), heartburn(burning pain in lower chest) and other symptoms of upper gastrointestinal tract dysfunction. Nausea(stomach discomfort and sensation of wanting to vomit) and vomiting due to gastro-intestinal disorders, intolerance to cytotoxic(toxic to cells) drugs, congestive heart failure, post-operative conditions, deep X-ray and cobalt therapy.

Side Effects

Patient may experience extrapyramidal reactions(drug induced movement disorder), neuroleptic malignant syndrome(life threatening reaction that occurs in response to antipsychotic medication), raised serum prolactin(hormone responsible for production of breast milk) leading to galactorrhoea(milky nipple discharge not related to normal milk production), irregular periods, gynaecomastia(males develop breast tissue), drowsiness(feeling of being sleepy), diarrhoea(frequent watery stools), rash(altered texture and color of skin), tremor(involuntary shaking of body) and agitation(state of anxiety).

There is no evidence of risk in humans. However, consult your physician for better advice.

Lactation

Caution is advised with this drug in lactating women. Consult your doctor for better advice. 

Driving

Please avoid driving when taking this medicine as it may affect your ability to drive.

Alcohol

Please avoid consuming alcohol when taking this medicine.

Precautions

Patients suffering from renal(kidney) and hepatic(liver) impairment, porphyria(liver disorder that affects skin and nervous system), parkinson’s(brain disorder that causes shaking, stiffness and difficulty in walking), atopy(tendency to develop allergic diseases), sick sinus syndrome(inability of the heart to create heart rate) and other cardiac conduction disturbances should be cautious.

Contraindications

This medicated is contraindicated in people that have gone through recent gastrointestinal surgery or suffer from gastrointestinal obstruction, perforation(hole in the wall of a part of gastrointestinal tract) or hemorrhage(bleeding from a ruptured blood vessel), prolactin(hormone responsible for the production of breast milk) dependent breast carcinoma, pheochromocytoma(tumor of adrenal gland tissue) and epilepsy(neurological disorder in which brain activity becomes abnormal causing periods of unusual behavior). This medication is not recommended for neonatal use.

What is Maxolon used for?

In adults it is used to treat nausea and vomiting caused by infectious diseases, migraine(brain disorder) kidney disease and child birth.

When should you take Maxolon?

Ideally you should take it by mouth 30 minutes before meals 4 times daily.

Who should not take metoclopramide?

Anyone who has had stomach or intestine problems, epilepsy(neurological disorder in which brain activity becomes abnormal causing periods of unusual beahviour) or an adrenal gland tumor.

Will I have to avoid eating certain foods during use of this medicine?

There are no significant foods that should be avoided during use of this medicine. However, your diet may be restricted to certain foods if you suffer from heartburn (avoidance of spicy food). You may be advised to avoid heavy meals if you have nausea and vomiting. It is recommended to take lots of fluids to prevent dehydration.

Will I have issues swallowing/ eating foods during use of this medicine or experience pain of any sort?

There are no such significant swallowing/ stomach related issues associated with use of this medicine. Rarely individuals experience pain because of this medicine however you may have pain due to the esophageal or stomach problem (till it lasts).

How many Maxolon can you take?

Recommended single dose is 10mg repeated three times daily.

How long does Maxolon injection take to work?

Within 1-3 minutes following an intravenous dose and 10-15 minutes following an intramuscular administration.
