This medicine is indicated as monotherapy or as an adjunct to beta blockers in chronic open angle glaucoma (painless condition due to damage of optic nerve, affecting the vision) or ocular hypertension (raised pressure inside the eye).
Patients using this medicine may experience darkening and growth of eyelashes, conjunctival hyperaemia (redness due dilation of vessels of conjunctiva), ocular pruritus (itchy eyes), pain, irritation, iris (coloured part of eye) discolouration, keratitis (inflammation of the cornea, a transparent covering on upper surface of eye), visual disturbance, headache, raised liver enzymes, hypertension (raised blood pressure) and conjunctival edema (swelling of the tissue that lines the conjunctiva).
Pregnancy

Precautions
Patients with renal (kidney), respiratory or moderate to severe hepatic (liver) impairment and risk of macular edema (fluid buildup at the back of the eye), history of significant viral ocular infection (eye infection due to virus), iritis (inflammation of iris, the coloured part of eye) and uveitis (inflammation of eye) are sensitive to the drug. Warn patients of possible eyelash growth and darkening of eyelid and change in eye colour which may not be noticeable until several months. Monitor patients with dry eyes for signs of keratopathy (damage to cornea, a transparent covering on the upper surface of the eye). There may be risk factors for bradycardia (slow heart rate) and hypotension (low blood pressure).
This medicine is contraindicated in patients with macular swelling (fluid buildup at the back of the eye), iritis (inflammation of iris, the coloured part of eye), uveitis (inflammation of eye), abnormal liver function tests, allergic to prostaglandins and in patients with absent eye lens.
What is bimatoprost used for?
It is used to treat raised pressure inside the eye.

It usually takes months to see the results after use of bimatoprost.
