Indications

This medicine is used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections. It is indicated in respiratory, ENT (ear, nose and throat), Urinary tract and soft tissue infections, Gonorrhea (an infection caused by a sexually transmitted bacterium), dental abscess (pus build up inside the teeth or gums), severe recurrent or acute otitis media (it is a group of inflammatory diseases of the middle ear). And also used in the prophylaxis of bacterial endocarditis (an infection caused by bacteria that settle in the heart lining, a heart valve or a blood vessel).

Side Effects

Patients administered with this medication may have a hypersensitivity reaction (intolerance) to it or they may experience gastrointestinal discomfort. Very rare adverse effects of this medication include hepatitis (inflammatory condition of the liver), cholestatic jaundice (obstruction in the transport of bilirubin; a yellow compound that helps in the metabolism (chemical reactions) of heme), pseudomembranous (antibiotic associated) colitis (inflammation of the inner lining of large intestine), increased INR (blood takes a longer time to form clots), and acute (short term) generalized exanthematous pustulosis (skin reaction related to medicine administration).

Precautions

The patients taking this medication must be cautious in cases of liver and kidney impairment, infectious mononucleosis (a group of symptoms usually caused by Epstein-Barr virus) and in those carrying risk of crystalluria (cloudy urine) on having high doses and acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis ( a rare skin reaction related to medicines). Therefore, stay hydrated and avoid overdosage

Contraindications

This medication is contraindicated in patients that are suffering from infectious mononucleosis (viral disease characterized by fever, sore throat, and pain). It is also contraindicated in patients that have hypersensitivity (intolerance) to penicillin (antibiotic), cephalosporins (antibiotic) or other beta-lactam drugs.
