It is indicated in duodenal ulcer (a sore on the first part of the small intestine), benign (non-cancerous) gastric ulcers (sores on stomach lining), for prevention of NSAID induced inflammation, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome (rare digestive disorder that results in excessive gastric acid), prevention and treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (a disorder that causes the digestive juices, foods or fluids back up from the stomach into the esophagus). It is also used with antibiotics for the eradication of Helicobacter Pylori in patients with duodenal ulcer (a sore on the first part of the small intestine) or gastritis (inflammation of stomach cells).
Nausea, headache, diarrhea (watery stools), constipation (difficulty in passing stool), skin rashes, fundic gland polyps (abnormal tissue outgrowths on the upper part of the stomach) are some of its side effects., and subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus (non-scarring disease of the skin which is sensitive to sunlight) is also reported.
Pregnancy
This medicine is most likely safe to use in pregnant females. However, please consult your doctor before use.
Lactation
It is contraindicated in lactating females, consult your doctor for further advice.
Alcohol
Please avoid consuming alcohol when taking this medicine.
Precautions
Exclude malignancy before and during the treatment. Monitor liver enzyme, discontinue if elevated. There is a possible risk of increased GI infection. In long-term therapy, there is an increased risk of hypomagnesemia (low magnesium levels), reduced vitamin B12 absorption and fractures.
It is contraindicated in patients who are allergic to proton pump inhibitors and in patients with infection from Clostridium difficile bacteria, inadequate vitamin b12, low magnesium levels in blood, osteoporosis (weak bones), interstitial nephritis (a type of inflammation of the kidney), subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus (non-scarring disease of the skin which is sensitive to sunlight).

Chronic kidney disease can occur after using pantoprazole.
Can this drug cause joint pain?
Yes joint pain is a common side effect of this drug.
Is it normal to have blood in urine after taking this drug?
No, this is most likely to be the cause of an allergic reaction.
Does this drug affect blood pressure?
Increased blood pressure and elevated heart beat may occur.
What are the long term effects of this drug?
Long term effects can cause seizures, tremors and muscle weakness.
I feel pain in my stomach, is this normal?
Stomach pain and gas is a side effect of this drug.
What should I avoid while using this medication?
This medicine can cause diarrhea, which may be a sign of a new infection. If you have diarrhea that is watery or bloody, call your doctor. Do not use anti-diarrhea medicine unless your doctor tells you to.
