This laboratory test is performed on a blood sample to measure the levels of creatinine. Creatinine is a waste product of muscles formed by the breakdown of creatine; an amino acid that provides energy for muscle contraction.

This test is performed:

- To evaluate the progress of disease
- As a part of the basic metabolic panel and renal panel.
- How to prepare for this test?
No special preparations are required for this test. However, inform your doctor about your complete medical and drug history before this test. Wear a short-sleeved shirt to aid the collection of sample.

- Why are creatinine levels in males higher than in females?
Since creatinine production depends upon the muscle mass, the levels of creatinine are higher in males as compared to females and children

- What are the risks of this test?
Collecting blood from a vein is a very easy procedure and pose only minimum risk, including:
- Bruising
- Bleeding
- Infection
- Lightheadedness

- Unexplained weight loss
- Decreased appetite
- Shortness of breath
- Swollen ankles, hands, or feet
- Urinary frequency
- Cloudy urine
- Itchy skin
- Increased thirst
- Fatigue
Males: 0.6 to 1.2 mg/dL
Females: 0.5 to 1.1 mg/dL

Causes of low creatinine levels:
- Loss of muscle
- Lack of protein in diet
- Severe liver disease
Causes of high creatinine levels:
- Kidney disease
- Muscle disease
- Diabetes
- Congestive heart failure
- Blockage of urinary tract
- Dehydration.
You should get tested if:
